In mid-March 1949, Dan and Angie left Bryan in care of Roxie and Harold and her parents for a trip to California with Dan's parents Gerrit and Cornelia. The trip was to visit Dan's sister Lorraine and her husband Merlin in San Diego as well as Angie's Uncle Bob and Aunt Elverda.

1954-06-00 Whistlin' Jack Lodge, Cliffdell. Dan and Angie "ventured into the resort and restaurant business in the spring of 1954 at Whistlin' Jack Lodge." The first year they moved up to the resort into the Selah cabin and stayed until December 7, 1954 to catch some of the hunting season buisiness. In the fall, every school day Dan and son Bryan would travel back and forth to Gilbert Elementery school in Yakima, one to teach and the other to attend first and second grades. Ricky was kept under the watchful eye of Cal the Great Dane and so generally stayed out of mischief. After two seasons ending in 1955, the venture ended.
1954 & 1955 Whistlin' Jack Lodge, Cliffdell. The Lodge and its rental cabins had been closed for several years before Dan and Angie leased the resort for two seasons. A large stone fireplace is all that remains today of the original building. During the summer, young son Bryan helped with sales in the Pop-Ice Cream-Candy shack to the right. The small cement nub in the lower right corner is the base of a Union 76 gas pump just off frame.
