| Notes |
- Various sources provide differing accounts of Mary Anne Barr's parentage. Common among them is that her father was a soldier, William Barr. Once source (see Herigstad anecdote below) has her mother as Elizabeth Mann. Other sources list her mother as Mary Crawford, born in Glasgow in 1791, the daughter of John Crawford and Elisabeth Todd. A more definitive answer to her parentage perhaps lies in the Regimental records for the 26th Foot in Gibraltar.
"... Mary Ann Barr ... was the daughter of an English solider, William Barr, and his wife, Elizabeth Mann Barr. A more Romantic tale of the founding of this family could not be imagined tha[n] the story which has passed from the oldest granddaughter of John Yuill.
It seems that William Barr was stationed with the 26th Regiment at the Rock of Gibraltar and when leaving for his post there lured his sweetheart, Elizabeth, on board ship to bid him goodbye. The ship sailed out to sea with Elizabeth aboard and she and William were married at sea. One account reports that Mary Ann Barr was born on ship; another account relates that she was born on the Rock of Gibraltar. At any rate she was baptized at Gibraltar on 09 October, 1814. She was 8 years old when the family moved back to Scotland where she later lived with an aunt and learned dressmaking." [Barbara Herigstad, The Nut Tree, p. 41] [9, 10]
