2004-08-07 Farewell to the Ranch. Seventeen acres of cherries, peaches, a couple apple trees, an apricot tree, a plum tree, an erstwhile walnut tree and Dad's raspberrry bushes. Acres that include piles of volcanic rocks, both small and monumental, many excavated over the decades from beneath the roots of dying fruit trees. The desiccated cheatgrass and tumbleweeds; the wizened sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) years older than us. Gopher holes galore revealed by tell-tale mounds of rich soil peaking above the thick orchard grass. Zeutenhorst Ranch, Naches Heights, Washington
